Tragedy has struck our city. Friday morning, two well-known and caring people passed away as a result of a fire in their apartment on lsland View Terrace.

As I spoke to the neighbors on scene early yesterday morning, the same thing was told to me over and over; ” … such nice, warm, caring, and kind people.’’ Balbina (Bali) and John Macchio were the best of Bayonne! Bali was a founding member and the first Executive Director of The Windmill Alliance, a group dedicated to serving those most in need in Bayonne.

Even after they are gone, Bali and John continue to bless their neighbors. The family has requested that any and all donations be made to benefit their fellow lsland View residents that have been displaced by this tragic fire. Donations for the people that have been displaced can be made to the BEOF at their office or on line at beof.org (beginning Tuesday).

On behalf of our grieving city, I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family of Bali and John and to thank them for honoring their memory in such a beautiful way.

Our residents have faced challenges and grief, but our community is strong … and in the true Bayonne spirit, we will be here for each other as we rebuild. God Bless Bali and John and May they Rest In Peace. #WeAreBayonne
